What truly differentiates doctors of chiropractic from any other healthcare professionals is the fact that chiropractors are the only professionals who are trained to diagnose and treat what are called spinal subluxations. A chiropractic subluxation is defined as a joint that has lost some of its normal movement resulting in biomechanical changes, vascular changes, connective tissue changes and most importantly, neurological changes.
In the state of New York the practice of the profession of chiropractic is defined as detecting and correcting by manual or mechanical means structural imbalance, distortion, or subluxations in the human body for the purpose of removing nerve interference and the effects thereof, where such interference is the result of or related to distortion, misalignment or subluxation of, or in, the vertebral column.
These changes get progressively worse over time if they are not treated correctly, leading to chronic pain, inflammation, arthritis, muscle trigger points, the formation of bone spurs, loss of movement, as well as muscle weakness and spasm. Chiropractors have known the dangers of the vertebral subluxation complex ever since the birth of the profession. More and more scientific research is demonstrating the tremendous detrimental impact that subluxation have on the tissue of the body. In order to be truly healthy, it is vital that your nervous system be functioning free of interference from subluxations.
When a subluxation occurs, a chiropractor can correct the misaligned bone or hypo-mobile vertebral joint and allow it to return to its proper position and function. This procedure is appropriately called an adjustment, and the adjustment enables the body to heal. The chiropractic adjustment is a quick thrust applied to a vertebra for the purpose of correcting its position, movement or both. Adjustments are often accompanied by an audible release of gas that sounds like a ‘pop.’ There are times when the audible ‘popping’ does not occur. This is often due to either significant muscle tightness or that the patient may be having a hard time relaxing during their adjustments. However, the chiropractic adjustment is still important.
The spinal cord is surrounded and protected by the spine. Because of the spine’s physical relationship to the spinal cord, the entire nervous system can be affected by the chiropractic adjustment. Similarly, a dysfunctional or improperly moving spine can have devastating effects on the nervous system which moderates pain and equally important, controls all hormonal, organ, sensory and muscle function.
At Schaffstall Chiropractic we remove nervous system interference from your body, helping your body to function optimally. As a wellness practice we consider your entire body with the understanding that all human illness and disease is caused by toxins, stress or trauma.
Health is defined as “A state of optimal physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.” Another way to describe health is your body’s ability to adapt to external stresses. Due to all of modern society’s stressors, it is important to have a proactive and preventative approach to your health. Keeping your spine healthy can help your body to work properly.
If you don’t have the time and money to improve your health while you feel good, what makes you think you will have the time and money to improve your health once you have lost it? As Anthony Robbins once said, “you can make time for wellness now or you can make time for sickness later.” The choice is yours. We are here to help.
